Lipid accumulation and fibrosis in the livers of CHOL-fed rabbits. a The livers of rabbits fed normal diets with or without injury appeared bright red and healthy. Substantial lipid accumulation in the liver caused visible pale or yellow color changes after 1% CHOL diet with or without endothelial injury. b Liver histology sections stained with Masson’s Trichrome revealed the presence of hepatocyte injury and fibrosis with CHOL feeding. The hepatocytes in livers of rabbits fed normal diets with or without injury appeared normal with low levels of fibrotic tissues present around the portal triads. Ballooning hepatocyte were observed in 1% CHOL fed rabbits with or without injury. The hepatocyte injury combined with marked fibrosis starting around the portal triads in the 1% CHOL + injury group rabbit livers indicated the presence of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)
