  1. Age and body mass index (BMI) are summarized as median and interquartile range. Body mass index was measured in kg/m2. Obesity was defined as “body mass index ≥ 30kg/m2”. The metabolic syndrome was defined in accordance with international guidelines (Alberti et al. 2013). Details of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and smoking history were self-reported and obtained from the QBB questionnaire
