Graphical representation of HPSE maturation. The pro-enzyme is secreted from the Golgi complex. In the extracellular space, it interacts with syndecans or other receptors that mediate its endocytosis. The pro-enzyme is activated into lysosomes by cathepsin-l. Then active HPSE is secreted into the extracellular milieu.
