Autoantibodies in patients with ARDS or severe sepsis. Shown are results from 24 controls, 35 ARDS and 13 sepsis patients. Each symbol represents a sample from one individual patient. The autoantibody titers for (A) IL-6 (B) IFN-ω, (C) IFN-γ, (D) IL1-α, (E) KCNRG and (F) gastric ATPase, (G) AQP-4 and (H) Ro52 antibody titers are plotted on the Y-axis using a log10 scale. The geometric mean antibody titer for the ARDS, sepsis and controls are shown by the short solid lines. The dashed line represents the cut-off level for determining seropositivity and is derived from the mean plus 3 SD of the antibody titer of the 24 controls. P values were calculated using the Mann Whitney U test and were only significant for anti-KCNRG autoantibodies (control vs. ARDS; P = 0.006 and control vs. sepsis; P = 0.03).
